Requirements to Rent a Car in Singapore

Car rentals can be an excellent option for those not intending to own a car but would appreciate having a couple of days of comfortable travel for themselves and their family or friends.

If this is your first time renting a car in Singapore, you will need to fulfill certain criteria, regardless if you are a Singaporean/PR or expat. For starters, you will need to have a valid Class 3 or 3A license to even consider looking for cheap car rentals in Singapore.

Other requirements that car rental companies would have if you intend to rent a car from them include the following:

Age limit

Most car rental companies would require you to be between the ages of 23 and 70 to rent a car. There are some exceptions where companies allow those younger or older than the standard range to rent, albeit at a higher premium. Dream Car Leasing’s minimum age to rent a car is 18 years old, lower than most car rental companies.

“P” Plate Drivers (Probation drivers)

If you have had your driving license for under a year, you will be considered as a “P” plate or probation driver. As a new driver, most car rental companies in Singapore will reject your rental application. Statistically speaking, inexperienced drivers are more prone to accidents and reckless driving. If the car is damaged due to an accident, the cheapest car rental company is expected to foot the exorbitant repair bills and maintenance costs.

Dream Car Leasing, on the other hand, understands that this concern will frustrate any “new” driver looking to rent a car. We welcome probation drivers to rent a car with us.

Expatriates requirements

For foreigners intending to rent a car in Singapore, you will need to produce a valid driving license issued by your home country that is officially translated to English, or an International Driving Permit (IDP). These two documents certify you to drive in Singapore for up to 12 months.

If you wish to drive for more than 12 months, you need to convert your foreign license into a Singapore driving license. To obtain a local license, you have to take two Basic Theory Tests, testing your knowledge about Singapore’s traffic rules and the Singapore Highway Code.

Do note that you need to pay a conversion fee of $50 which is inclusive of the theory tests, but not the test application fee or study materials (e.g. Basic Theory textbook).
